Clients are increasingly demanding that the industry improves its delivery of projects, particularly the management design and that it should learn from the best in industrial practice. An answer is design chains, which are formed when organisations collaborate in the development of project design information. This handbook describes how companies can understand and work with each other, and develop sustaining relationships to address and accommodate design process complexity.

The Integrated Collaborative Design research project and Thomas Telford have together produced a handbook which addresses this need through the use of design chains. Design Chains: A handbook for integrated collaborative design is available from Thomas Telford.
